I've spent a lot of time thinking about the gap between when people need help and when help actually shows up. That gap exists everywhere β but on college campuses, it's particularly visible. And particularly costly.
Anxiety, depression, loneliness, stress β these aren't occasional concerns for today's students. They're part of the everyday experience. And the question for university leaders isn't really whether to provide support anymore. It's whether that support is there at the exact moment a student actually needs it.
Students don't struggle from 9 to 5.
Think about when it actually happens. Not mid-morning on a Tuesday when the counseling center is open. It happens at midnight after a failed exam. It happens during winter break when the campus goes quiet and a student is suddenly alone with everything they've been pushing down. It happens in the parking lot after a call from home that didn't go well.
Something that doesn't get talked about enough: some of the most vulnerable moments don't happen while students are actively in school. They happen during breaks. When the structure of classes and activities and social connection pauses, students have more time to think. That's when the underlying stuff β family dynamics, financial stress, relationship pressure, identity questions β surfaces more fully.
And if there's nothing available in that moment, the moment gets worse.
What might have been addressed through a simple conversation can grow into something that affects academic performance, retention, and β in some cases β student safety. The gap between need and support matters more than we sometimes realize.
Counseling centers are doing their best. It's not enough.
I want to be clear that I have enormous respect for campus counseling professionals. They're carrying an impossible load. But the reality is that demand has outpaced capacity at nearly every institution in the country β and even a short delay between when a student reaches out and when they're actually seen creates a window where things can get worse.
Those numbers aren't a criticism of campus counselors β they're a systems problem. The model was built for a different era, and the need has grown far faster than the infrastructure.
What happens when support is actually immediate.
Here's what I've seen when students can connect with a qualified clinician at the first sign of distress β not days later, but right then:
Students expect access to be simple. We keep making it complicated.
Today's students grew up with everything available instantly. Food delivery, streaming, tutoring on demand. The idea of calling a phone number during business hours, being placed on a waitlist, and scheduling something three weeks out β that friction alone is enough to make a lot of students give up and say they're fine.
When access feels easy, students use it. When it feels like a process, they don't. That's not a character flaw β it's human nature.
What "1st Moment" support actually looks like on campus
Connecting students with clinicians in real time β right when they need it.
Not to replace campus counseling. To extend it in a way that matches how students actually live and experience stress β which is to say, at all hours, often unexpectedly, and usually when the traditional system isn't available.
Virtual access. No waitlist. Available during breaks, at night, on weekends. With clinicians who understand the specific pressures of academic life.
The most meaningful intervention is often the simplest one: being there in the moment that matters.
This is a student success strategy, not just a wellness initiative.
I want to leave you with this framing, because I think it changes the conversation at the leadership level. When we talk about mental health support as a "wellness benefit," it gets treated like a nice-to-have. When we talk about it as a retention strategy, an academic performance strategy, a liability reduction strategy β it gets the attention it deserves.
Because the data is pretty clear: students who get support early stay enrolled. They perform better. They graduate. The ROI on reducing that gap between need and care is measurable β in retention rates, in campus climate scores, in the number of interventions that never have to happen because someone got help before things got serious.
From where I sit, institutions that solve this problem aren't just doing the right thing. They're doing the smart thing.
